Yesterday I wanted to install MS Visual Studio Team Suite 2008 for my school project. I had to cancel my plans as Vista decided that DVD-rom drivers are corrupted. Why this happened I do not know. I tried various things including:
  • uninstalling driver
  • updating driver
  • I've search MS Update
  • disabling and enabling device
As you can guess - nothing worked. After hours of searching I've found helpful article in MS Help and Support center - You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

At first I've downloaded and tried Guided help, but it didn't work for me. Article is written for Windows XP so I was a bit concerned about deleting registry entries manually in my Vista but nothing else worked so this was my last chance.

Backup your registry first!

  1. Click Start, type systempropertiesprotection in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER
  2. Wait for Windows to search for available disks and most recent restore points.
  3. In the System Properties dialog box, on the System Protection tab, click Create
  4. Type a name for the restore point and then click Create.

Get your DVD / CD roms back!

  1. Start Registry Editor -> Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. Registry Editor starts.
  2. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  3. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
  4. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
  5. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
  6. In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters. -> Note An UpperFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the UpperFilters registry entry, you must click UpperFilters and not UpperFilters.bak.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  8. In the right pane (topic area), click LowerFilters. -> Note An LowerFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the LowerFilters registry entry, you must click LowerFilters and not LowerFilters.bak.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  10. Restart
